Virginia is home to nearly 700,000 veterans and their families, many of whom face the invisible burdens of military service, transitions, and caregiving. Yet, too many never seek support—held back by stigma, privacy concerns, rural isolation, or demanding schedules.
Virginia Veteran and Family Support (VVFS), a program of the Virginia Department of Veterans Services, has long provided trusted, peer-led support for service members, veterans, and their families (SMVF). But they needed a solution that could extend their reach without sacrificing the personal connection that makes peer support so effective.
A Unique Hybrid Approach
To overcome these challenges, VVFS partnered with Cabana, a leader in technology-enabled peer support, to create an innovative hybrid model:
✔️ Virginia Peer Specialists as Virtual Moderators – VVFS certified peer leaders, trained to use Cabana’s intuitive platform, now facilitate confidential, virtual support groups for veterans and families.
✔️ More Ways to Engage – Virginia SMVF participants can choose between VVFS-led groups, Cabana’s 30+ professionally moderated sessions each week, or 24/7 access to therapist-curated self-care resources.
✔️ Confidential, Flexible Support – Veterans can now seek help when and how they need it, breaking through traditional barriers that kept many from reaching out.
